To spearhead sustainable management, development and utilization of dryland resources, five priority thematic research areas have been identified:

1. Establishing performance-driven regional networking, resource mobilization and partnership mechanisms.
2. Developing and promoting sustainable dryland resource-based enterprises.
3. Developing and promoting coping and adaptation mechanisms for climate induced and other disasters.
4. Developing strategic human capacity for dryland biodiversity research and management.
5. Strengthening and promoting social institutions and capital.
